HILTON KIDS SUMMER CAMP 2003

On the morning of August 14th 2003, members of the Heroes Foundation headed to the Trinidad Hilton Hotel and Conference Centre to participate in the Hilton Kids Summer Camp 2003. Following a brief introduction, Acting Assistant Superintendent, Margaret Sampson-Browne of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Force, joined the Foundation in their endeavor to inform the children of the duties and services of the Police in terms of assisting the Community. She discussed important information about personal safety and brought along Head Gear from the various ranks of the Police Force for the kids to try on. Not once did she lose their attention during her presentation and to everyone’s delight, one young boy was so eager he began to “walk the beat” or “guard” the other kids in the camp!

Later on a few comic book artists joined the session and gave the children pointers on how to draw their own stories. They also spoke to the children about the concept of heroism. They stressed the fact that you don’t need super powers to be a hero. There are heroes in all walks of life, be it the men and women in the Fire Service and the Police Force or the Doctor who saves people’s lives. One young girl was commended for recognizing her mother as a Hero for taking care of her and her siblings.

After this intimate talk, Sketch paper, pencils and colour pencils were handed out and paper was placed on the walls and on tables so that everyone was able to draw and colour as they pleased. Toward the end of the two-hour session, Wolverine, Shadow Cat and Beast of Rogue Artists surprised the kids with their X-Men Costumes. The Artists also did portraits and character drawings for the children as they gathered around to watch their techniques in awe.

The Foundation members joined the children and Camp Leaders for lunch and left with kids begging for them to return! Hopefully the Foundation will be able to visit the Hilton again next year for another chance to inspire the youth

ARROW - HOSTED LITERACY DAY EXTRAVAGANZA 2008

On Saturday 20th September, 2008 A.R.R.O.W. (an acronym for Aural, Read, Respond, Oral, Write) hosted their 3rd Literacy Day Extravaganza at the Cascadia Hotel St. Ann’s.

The local A.R.R.O.W. Programme was launched three years ago in Trinidad and Tobago. A.R.R.O.W. exposes children to techniques designed to improve their reading skills.  Many parents across Trinidad and Tobago face the challenge of getting their children to read more, the event provides an avenue for parents to learn more about the programme and for attending children to get exposure to the benefits of reading.

“Over 400 children have improved their reading as a result of participating in this programme,” said Ms. Cornelia Bonterre, ARROW Senior Consultant. The Literacy Extravaganza featured a reading corner, poetry competition and free books for children. The Heroes Foundation is a supporter of this initiative and hosted a booth at the event.  Children who visited received free comic books along with a colour page for them to offer a definition on ‘what is a hero’ to them.
